How Much Should You Budget for a Wedding Cake?

Do you ever ask yourself... "How much should we budget for our wedding cake?"

You may not know how to split your full wedding budget, or how much a wedding cake costs. So I have written a small guide.

Your wedding cake budget depends on many different things... let me explain!

Wedding cake budgets vary hugely depending on the style of wedding you're planning, the design you're looking for, and how important your cake is to your overall vision. Here in Suffolk, we're lucky to have such a diverse range of wedding venues, from rustic barns and country houses to grand halls and stately homes. Because of that, wedding cake budgets can vary just as much.

For many couples, a realistic budget is anywhere from £300 to £1,000+, depending on the type of cake they choose.

How Much Does a Bespoke Wedding Cake Cost?

Every cake I create is designed specifically for each couple, so no two are ever the same.

My bespoke wedding cakes start from £790 for a 3-tier design, with my couples typically spending around £850.

For couples planning a smaller celebration or working within a smaller budget, I also offer:

  • Intimate wedding cake packages from £275 [more info]

  • Semi-naked wedding cakes from £585 [more info]

These options still provide a beautiful centrepiece while requiring less intricate design work, making them a great choice if you'd like to prioritise flavour and quality while keeping costs more manageable.

What Actually Affects the Cost of a Wedding Cake?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you're simply just paying for cake.

In reality, you're investing in hours of planning, preparation, creativity, knowledge and experience.

The biggest factor that influences the price of a bespoke wedding cake is time.

The more personalised the design, the more time goes into creating it. This could include:

  • Handcrafted sugar flowers

  • Bespoke stencils

  • Custom colour matching

  • Hand-modelled decorative elements

  • Intricate textures and finishes

There's also a great deal of work that happens long before your cake is baked.

Behind the scenes, I'm planning your design, ordering ingredients and materials, preparing decorations in advance, coordinating timings, communicating with your venue, and ensuring every detail is ready for your wedding day.

If you're choosing fresh flowers on your cake, I'll also liaise with your florist to ensure everything works beautifully together before carefully arranging the flowers during set-up.

Delivery distance can also affect the overall cost, particularly if your venue is further afield.

One thing that doesn't affect the price? Flavours.

I never charge extra if you'd like each tier to be a different flavour because I believe choosing your favourites should be part of the experience.

How Can You Save Money on Your Wedding Cake?

If you're working with a smaller budget, there are plenty of ways to create a beautiful cake without compromising on quality.

A semi-naked cake is a fantastic option if you'd like something elegant while reducing the amount of intricate decorating involved.

Another popular choice is to have a smaller display cake for the traditional cake cutting, alongside an alternative dessert or tray bakes to serve your guests.

If you've always dreamed of a dramatic 4-tier (or larger) cake, faux tiers or adding cake accessories can also be a brilliant solution. While they don't dramatically reduce the overall cost, they allow you to achieve the impressive height and visual impact without ending up with more cake than your guests will eat.

When Should You Book Your Wedding Cake?

Ideally, I'd recommend booking your wedding cake 9–12 months before your wedding, particularly if you're getting married during the busy spring and summer months.

Popular dates fill quickly, and booking early means you'll have the widest choice of availability.

When Should You Decide Your Wedding Cake Budget?

Although your cake may not be the first supplier you book, it's helpful to include it in your budget from the beginning.

Knowing roughly what you'd like to invest makes it much easier to explore your options and avoid disappointment later on.

Your plans may evolve as your wedding comes together, but having an idea of your budget early gives you a realistic starting point and helps you understand what's achievable.

Your wedding cake is so much more than an evening treat.

It's part of your celebration, your photographs, and one of the first things your guests will gather around during your reception. More importantly, it's a handcrafted piece created specifically for you.

Whether you're looking for an elegant semi-naked design or a completely bespoke statement cake, understanding where your budget goes helps you make an informed decision and choose a cake that's right for your day.
