Bespoke vs Standard Wedding Cakes: Is a Custom Design Worth It?

Planning your wedding cake can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you start seeing terms like "bespoke" and "standard" being used.
And honestly, most couples I speak to aren’t completely sure what “bespoke” actually means when it comes to a wedding cake. So I thought I’d break it down in a simple way, so you can decide what feels right for your day.
What is a standard wedding cake?

A standard wedding cake is usually a pre-designed option, where the style has already been created and the choices are more streamlined.
For me, this is what I offer through my semi-naked cake packages.
The overall design is already planned, so couples are choosing from a set style rather than starting from scratch. There’s still some flexibility, like flavours and the types of flowers used, but the structure and overall look are already decided.
This makes the process simpler and quicker, which works amazingly well for more relaxed weddings or couples who want something elegant without needing lots of design decisions.
What is a bespoke wedding cake?

A bespoke wedding cake is something completely designed around you and your wedding.
It’s not about choosing from options - it’s about creating something from scratch, based on your ideas, your styling, and the overall feel of your day.
This usually includes:
A consultation to talk through your ideas
Pulling together inspiration or mood boards
Sketches created specifically for you
Designing around your venue, colours, and styling
Working closely with your florist or stylist
It’s a much more collaborative process, and it allows me to design something that feels like a natural part of your wedding, rather than something that’s just been added in.
Why bespoke cakes take more time (and cost more)
This is where the biggest difference comes in.
With a bespoke cake, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that couples don’t always see.
For example:
I colour match everything by hand, often to fabric swatches or exact colour palettes
I source or create bespoke elements like stencils, monograms, or cake charms
I design the proportions and structure so the cake works visually in your space
I spend time researching and refining the design so everything feels cohesive
If sugar flowers are involved, they’re made well in advance, carefully stored, and designed to match your real flowers in both colour and type.
If you’re having fresh flowers, I’ll liaise directly with your florist to make sure everything is safe to use on the cake, and coordinate timings so we can apply them properly on the day.
There’s a lot of experience and planning that goes into making sure everything comes together.
It’s not just about the cake

One of the most important things I focus on with bespoke designs is making sure the cake doesn’t feel like a separate entity. It shouldn’t stand out for the wrong reasons or feel disconnected from the rest of your day.
Instead, it should:
Blend beautifully with your styling
Tie in with your flowers and colour palette
Feel like part of your décor, not just something for the cake cutting
That’s often the difference between a cake that’s simply there… and one that feels like a true centrepiece.
Is a bespoke wedding cake worth it?
It really depends on what matters most to you.
If you’re looking for something simple, with less decision-making involved, a standard design or package can be the perfect option.
But if you want:
A cake that reflects your style as a couple
Something that fits seamlessly into your wedding design
A centrepiece that’s just as considered as the rest of your day
Then a bespoke cake is absolutely worth it.
You’re not just paying for the cake itself - you’re investing in the design, the thought, and the experience behind it.
Which option is right for you?
If your wedding is more relaxed or rustic, or you’d prefer a simpler process, a semi-naked cake package might suit you perfectly.
If your wedding design is more detailed, styled, or you’ve already put a lot of thought into the overall look of your day, then a bespoke cake will give you that extra level of finish.
When I speak to couples, I usually start by asking about your venue and the style of your wedding. From there, it becomes quite clear which direction will suit you best.
A quick note on “wedding pricing”
Something I hear quite often is the idea of a “wedding tax.”
The truth is, there isn’t one.
Weddings simply involve a higher level of care, time, and coordination. You’re not just paying for a product - you’re paying for the experience, the expertise, and the reassurance that everything will come together exactly as it should on such an important day.
At the end of the day...

There’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to your wedding cake. It’s about choosing the option that fits your priorities, your style, and how you want your day to feel.
If you’d like a cake that’s been thoughtfully designed to sit beautifully within your wedding, rather than just being added on at the end, bespoke is where that really comes into its own.
